Sophie Bresnahan
I met Cicely many years ago now, and I have social media to thank for the way we’ve been able to stay connected - to quietly keep up with one another’s lives and notice the many interests and values we share.
Cicely is an actor, writer, and avid reader, and she is unfailingly my go-to for thoughtful book recommendations. I have discovered some brilliant writing thanks to her suggestions. Our exchanges over the years often began with comments on books, or me asking for her thoughts on a popular title. But through this, we soon discovered we had a lot more in common.
I admire Cicely and her gentle but intentional approach to life. I’m very excited about her new writing project, solitudes, via Substack, and I’m so glad we get to delve deeper into her world through this interview, enjoy!
Please introduce yourself, and what it is you so wonderfully do:
My name is Sophie and I’m the founder of Loop Loop, is a sustainable plantable card company, in which all the cards are created from recycled materials, and can be planted to grow a patch of wildflowers from the paper. The idea is that everything loops back round, to a new life. I’m also the writer and illustrator of my first (of hopefully many) children’s picture books, called The Mouse and the Mushroom Blooms.
What is your ideal way to start the day?
I am a bit of an early bird and usually wake up naturally around 6:45, if not earlier. I love moving my body in the morning. Either at the gym or stretching and doing some yoga. It clears my mind and sets me up for the day ahead.
Do you have any daily rituals/ routines?
Music is a backdrop to my movement, so I always listen to music when I’m cycling, or in the gym. I also love lighting candles in the evening, it’s just the ideal way to signify it’s time to relax after a long day. I also make sure to read for 10 to 15 minutes in bed before I go to sleep. My cat, Juno, will often come up when I’m settled for a cuddle as well, which is part of her routine which has melded into my routine, which gives it an ultimate cosy feeling to end the day.
Do you have any practices or remedies to stay healthy, both in body and mind?
I am a bit of a bad practice keeper. So although I pick up lots of things; morning pages, meditation, running, etc etc… I don’t seem to be able to keep these up regularly. But I know I can dip into them when I need to. I am also a big fan of Acupuncture and Reflexology. Both have a brilliant way of relaxing me in a way that other things don’t and I love giving myself an hour just to relax my brain and my body. My cats are also hugely grounding for me. I’ve only had cats for the last 3 years, and they have changed how I live for the better. Just having their lovely relaxing presence is so good for me. I bring quite Yang energy, so I need Yin energy to chill me out, which my cats most certainly have.
When you need to get out of town/ out of routine, where do you goor what do you doto escape?
Either for a loud escape out in the world, I love going to gigs, listening to live music, or going to have a dance and stomping it out. Or for a quiet escape, I love going to the cinema and having that completely immersive experience in another world. Or the old faithful, head out to the country for a walk or a forage. There’s nothing like a treasure hunt in the woods, to get out of my head and escape.
How do you like to spend your nights and or/weekends?
I really enjoy being around people who make me laugh, and I’m a pretty social person, so I love spending it with my loved ones, and going to lovely pubs, country walks. But equally I do have a quota and need to balance that out. I can’t just keep socialising, otherwise I get utterly exhausted! I’ve learnt this the hard way, but I’m finally starting to learn to build in chill time to fill my cup back up.
How do you unwind, re-centre and find balance?
I absolutely LOVE a bath as a form of reset. If I need to completely switch my mood, I have a triple combo which is; bath, candles, trash TV, and the secret ingredient… Pizza in the bath. It almost feels so wrong to do, but it feels so right for me!
What is your favourite form of movement?
I really love Yin in the chapter of life I’m in now. Yin is a slow, and conscious way of dropping into my body and every time I do it, I always thank myself and promise myself to do it more!
Your favourite meal to cook?
I love making pies! Especially in the winter, nothing beats a delicious hearty pie.
Your favourite place to get dinner?
Perhaps Bincho on Preston Street… I love any Japanese food, so as long as it’s good, I am happy!
Your guilty pleasure? :)
I do really like watching bad romcoms. I know they are terrible, and the plot is so simple, but I love it and it’s pure escapism.
Do you experience any challenges in your work/life balance? If so, how do you navigate this?
I work four days a week for an Events company, as well as juggling my business and illustrating my new book which will be out this year. So yes, life is a juggle to say the least! I don’t know how I do it, but I make it work, because all the elements are needed to make it all work.
What/where/who do you turn to when you need inspiration?
I can find inspiration in music, or films, or art galleries, podcasts or something I read in a story. I never used to read fiction, but that’s been a really lovely exploration in the last five years. Inspiration can come from anywhere really. I’ve thought long and hard about something a complete stranger has said to me, and that’s influenced how I think. It’s nice to know it can come from so many varied places.
How would you describe your style? What & who influences you?
I didn’t go to art school, or have very traditional art lessons, so I always think I don’t have a ‘style’, but that clearly is part of my style. I absolutely LOVE colour, so that feeds into everything I do, and how I want to present things. I really love watercolour, and how the colours smash together on the page, and how unpredictable but exciting it can be to watch it form. Writing wise, I love Dr Seuss, I love Julia Donaldson, and Oliver Jeffers. But also when I look at what I produce there’s always a sort of Pagan influence, and everything is really set in nature.
What is your definition of beauty?
Sometimes when I look at something and it doesn’t quite look right, my eyes go fuzzy on their own accord. I don’t know why, but I know when that happens, something is jarring for me. I think beauty is when you look at something, it makes you feel relaxed, and calm.
Do you have any additional ways that you care for your mind, body & spirit?
I have a new book coming out which is all about the Moon, so it fits in with The Moon Space so well! It’s about a girl who wants to lasso the moon down from the sky to be her friend, and shall be coming out as soon as I finish the illustrations. I’ve always spoken to the moon, controversially I call it a man, but I like that I can communicate with the moon, or something I’ll have a little word with the sea, or a rock I find. It’s maybe a bit strange to say, but I think it makes the world feel more friendly and approachable, if you imagine you have the moon on your side. In this new book, the main character talks to the sea, and the shells, so actually thinking about it, I've definitely projected myself into the main character.
What are you most grateful for in your life?
I am so grateful for my partner, Cameron. I know it’s a cliche to say, but it took me a while to find him and since being with him, it;s enabled me to free up so much brain space. He’s a musician so we are able to enjoy each other’s creations and what makes each other come alive. We are also able to be each other's creative directors. It’s a very unique relationship and I absolutely love that he understands me in the way that he does and he supports me and hopefully I do him too.
